"No" To Generator, "Yes" to Hawaii

May 16, 2009 By: admin Category: Business School, Grooming equipment

grooming-trailer-hawaiiMy wife, Kim, is the Highlands Ranch mobile groomer.  She’s been gooming for about ten years and saves over $5,000 each year by simply being smart about her grooming trailer.  This strategy won’t work in hotter climates, but here in Colorado it is easy to save over five grand each year by not using a generator on her grooming trailer.

Once the numbers are crunched, it is easy to see how much of a drain a generator really is.  In addition to the initial cost of installing a quality machine, there are expenses such as fuel, oil and filter changes, etc.  In order to keep a warranty, regular services must be maintained.

We’ve been teaching for a few years now that the money saved can pay for a week in Hawaii, and Kim has decided to surprise me with another (much needed) vacation!  No wonder why so many mobile dog groomers look to her for guidance!  Yes, mobile grooming is  a great way  to make a living.

THINK Like a Businessperson

February 04, 2008 By: admin Category: Business School

Businesspeople READ, hobbyists look for PICTURES. So you decide…

The best way to make sure you go out of business as a mobile pet groomer is to FOLLOW THE CROWD. Instead, here’s an idea, make smart business decisions!

The single most common BAD decision mobile groomers make is the salon they purchase. Let me rephrase that, it’s the salon they finance, stay up-side-down with, go out of business with, and can’t sell. (more…)

Getting And Keeping Customers

December 09, 2006 By: admin Category: Business School

What a week! I’ve obviously been dealing with fruitcakes lately. Today, I got lectured by a man who called me to come out to groom his dog. Getting and keeping customers is the secret to success but he used all the “buzz words” that make mobile groomers want to hang up the phone. Words like “never groomed before, old, doesn’t like to be brushed,” experienced mobile groomers know the lingo. Truth is, our Decembers are booked out a year in advance so there was no chance that this man was going to be serviced by us. We told the man that (more…)

Raising Prices for grooming services

January 13, 2006 By: admin Category: Business School

Raising your grooming price can be a difficult task for the mobile dog groomer. Most mobile companies raise their prices a couple of dollars each year to keep up with inflation. However, some customers always seem to feel picked on. Instead of raising your price this year, use a trick from the retail world and offer an “add-on” service. Offer to brush the dog’s teeth for only an additional $5 and you will be amazed at how many people take you up on it. Cheap, disposable toothbrushes and paste can be purchased from petedge and cost only about a dime each. Each brushing only takes about a minute and you have added hundreds of dollars to you profit each month – without raising prices!

Mobile Grooming Salon Price

December 12, 2005 By: admin Category: Business School, Trailers and Vans

It is important to note that most used mobile grooming salons for sale are less than two years old. It is also important to note that most of those salons are expensive vans. The reason for this is because the entrepreneur’s business failed and she could not keep up with the van payments. The vehicle that the mobile grooming entrepreneur chooses is one of the largest business decision she’ll make! When the time comes for you to make this decision, choose a vehicle that realistically fits your budget. If your payments are $1,000 then understand that you will need to groom 20 dogs at $50 every month just to make the payment. Remember, when you first start out you will probably have no clients but that payment is still going to be due. Be careful not to saddle yourself into payments that could actually be profits, if only your vehicle was a little bit less expensive!
